To Kill a Tiger – Must watch Documentary – Disturbing yet Compelling

To Kill a Tiger – Released in 2022 a must watch documentary is now available on Netflix. It is one of disturbing yet compelling documentary which should be promoted to showcase the ugly truth of society and how it can change.

Let me confess – I do like watching films and shows and provide my reviews and recommendations in closed groups, but first time I am compelled to put this in public, because this story needs to be told and watched.

It is a real story about a Braveheart Girl and family who fought against all the odds to get justice. Though it is more than 15 year old story, still is relevant to change the mindsets of Patriarchal Society. Having lived and worked in rural areas of Jharkhand I am completely empathetic to understand the predicament of the Girl, Her unwavering and supporting family as well as the determination of the NGOs and support groups. Also Heartfelt to note the believe common man has on the India’s judicial systems and though it took time the Justice was served. Kudos to the maker of this documentary. This is a piece of History. It is also Brave for the Girl to agree and put her real face on the documentary. I request everyone to please follow advises given in the film and DO Read those guidance’s.

This could have been very easily sensationalized and turn into a propaganda or blamed as showcasing India in negative lights yet the documentary is quite balanced and try to put plain facts as story and avoid all the debatable issues which could have made it otherwise a political satire.

I am compelled to give a detailed review here -This is not a binge watch- It is slow and smooth take it with a pinch of salt, don’t try to Gulp it. Directed byNisha Pahuja, To Kill a Tiger is a harrowing yet inspiring documentary that delves into the deeply rooted patriarchal structures of rural India. It focuses on the courageous fight for justice by a family in Jharkhand after their teenage daughter becomes a survivor of brutal sexual violence.

1. Message and Social Impact

The documentary shines a stark light on the harsh realities faced by women in patriarchal societies, highlighting systemic failures in law enforcement and cultural norms. The family’s unwavering determination to seek justice, despite ostracism and threats, is a testament to resilience. The film is a powerful critique of gender inequality and a rallying cry for change, emphasizing the urgent need for societal reform.

2. Entertainment and Emotional Engagement

While the subject matter is heavy, the film captivates through its raw emotional power. It evokes anger, empathy, and hope, keeping the audience invested in the family’s fight. The pacing is steady, allowing viewers to absorb the gravity of the situation while rooting for the family’s quest for justice. While This is mature, sensitive and very serious subject matter still in my opinion this can be viewed with all the family together where minors would need parent’s explanations wherever required.

3. Direction and Narrative

Nisha Pahuja’s direction is empathetic and respectful, focusing on the human aspect of the tragedy without sensationalizing it. The narrative builds on the family’s struggles and triumphs, offering a nuanced portrayal of their courage amidst a flawed justice system.

4. Cinematography and Sound

The cinematography captures the rural landscapes of Jharkhand with authenticity, contrasting the serenity of the environment with the violence and challenges faced by the family. The sound design complements the visuals, with moments of silence amplifying the emotional weight of the story.

Strengths

• Empowerment through Storytelling: The film highlights how an ordinary family can challenge oppressive systems, inspiring viewers globally.

• Balanced Perspective: Pahuja masterfully balances hope and despair, focusing on both the systemic issues and the transformative power of perseverance.

Weaknesses

• Heavy Subject Matter: The details and emotional intensity might be overwhelming for some viewers, limiting its reach to a broader audience, yet My recommendations – Must Watch.

• Lengthy – with 2 hours of duration, this is bit slow and lengthy but justifies the narration. Bear with it the silences and pause are necessary to capture the emotions.

Let me summaries :-

I am compelled to write such long review. To Kill a Tiger is not just a documentary; it’s a movement captured on screen. It’s a profound, heart-wrenching, and ultimately HOPEFUL story of Courage in the face of adversity. This is a piece of work which serves as a vital contribution to global conversations about gender equality and justice.

Rating: ★★★★★ (5/5)

This is a must-watch for anyone interested in impactful storytelling that blends art and activism.
